Release of New Water Security Report

Non-profit think tank, Civic Exchange, will release a new report, Liquid Assets – Water Security and Management in the Pearl River Watershed and Hong Kong, on 4 December 2009. The report is timely in light of severe droughts in Guangdong, and extensive water crisis in many parts of the mainland.

The bilingual report is the first one to look at water security and the possible competition and conflicts that may develop for South China from the perspective of the whole of the Pearl River watershed. The report also assesses the impact of climate change on water supply in South China. Civic Exchange believes it is the long-term health of the whole watershed that will sustain life and economic activities going forward.

The report also discusses Hong Kong’s water supply, as well as water management, including opportunities for ensuring long-term water security. It ends with a series of policy recommendations for the mainland on water management, as well as suggestions that are directly relevant to Hong Kong and Macau.
